Heat and stop-and-go around Kendall

Driving around Kendall means a lot of stopping and starting on Kendall Drive, US 1 and the Palmetto. Every stop and start makes the transmission shift again, and Miami heat keeps the fluid hot for much of the year.

Heat is what wears transmission fluid out. Once the fluid breaks down, clutches slip, shifts get rough, and a small problem grows into a big one. Caught early, the fix is usually smaller and you have more choices.

Signs it is time to get it checked

The engine revs but the car is slow to pick up speed. Shifts come hard or late, especially after sitting in traffic. There is a pause when you put it in Drive or Reverse.

Also watch for red or brown spots where you park, a check engine light that shows up along with a shifting problem, and a burning smell after a slow commute. Any one of these is worth a diagnosis before it gets worse.

Getting here from Kendall

From Dadeland Mall, get on Kendall Drive (SW 88th St) and take the ramp to the Palmetto Expressway north. Get off at Miller Drive (SW 56th St), turn right, then left on SW 72nd Ave, go north about a mile and turn left on SW 42nd St. That is about 9 minutes outside rush hour.

From Baptist Hospital and the middle of Kendall, take the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874, a toll road) north to the Bird Road exit. Turn right on Bird Road, then right on SW 72nd Ave and right on SW 42nd St. That is about 10 to 11 minutes outside rush hour.

What happens when you bring it in

We diagnose first. Some cars only need a fluid service, a solenoid or a leak fixed. Others need a rebuild or a replacement. If the cause is not clear yet, you approve the diagnostic fee before we start, and we tell you up front whether it counts toward the repair.

Then you get a written price with photos of your own car, so you see what we see. Sales tax goes on parts only, and you pick the warranty: 90 days, 1 year or 2 years. We text you at each step, the counter speaks English and Spanish, and we road test the car before you get the keys back.

Questions people ask

How do I get to the shop from Kendall?
From Dadeland, take Kendall Drive (SW 88th St) to the Palmetto Expressway north, get off at Miller Drive (SW 56th St), turn right, then left on SW 72nd Ave and left on SW 42nd St. From farther west, the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874, a toll road) north to the Bird Road exit is quickest.
Is it worth the drive from Kendall?
That is your call. Here you get a diagnosis before any recommendation, a written price before any work, and photos of what we found. Tax is on parts only, and you choose how long the warranty runs. If a smaller repair fixes the problem, we tell you.
Which transmission work do you do?
Diagnostics, repairs, rebuilds and replacement with a remanufactured, used or OEM unit. We also do fluid service, CVTs, manual transmissions and clutches, and transfer cases and differentials.
It started slipping on my way home. Should I keep driving it?
Drive it as little as you can and stay off the Palmetto and other expressways until it is checked. A slipping transmission can lose drive in traffic, and every mile adds damage. If it slips badly or will not move, have it towed through your roadside plan and let us know it is coming.
